# 20 Questions

20 Questions with William Joseph Hill, Author of 'Cyber Fighter' #20Questions

Today's guest is William Joseph Hill, author of the scifi, CYBER FIGHTER. William is here today to answer 20 questions about his life, writing and goals.

1. Are you a morning writer or a night writer?

I’ve become a morning person.  I love to write with a nice hot cup of coffee and it’s often the quietest part of the day, especially if I get started at 6am.

2. Do you outline or are you a pantster?

I tend to begin my stories as a pantser and then during the rewrites I will apply an outline.  That goes back to starting off my writing life as a screenwriter where structure is very important.

3. Which comes first – plot or character?

It really depends on the story.  For a lot of my action stories, it’s all about plot, and then I flesh my characters out during the rewrite process.

4. Noise or quiet when working on your manuscript?

I love listening to movie soundtracks in my headphones while writing.  It gets me thinking visually.

5. Favorite TV show?

My current favorite is Cobra Kai.  I grew up with the original Karate Kid and the series is one of the best written.  I really love how they have taken a deep dive into the original characters’ backstories.

6. Favorite type of music?

In addition to movie soundtracks, I love old-school Hip Hop from the 1980s, and alternative 1990s rock.  Back in the day I was a B-boy around the same time I began training in martial arts.

7. Favorite craft besides writing?

That would be the performing arts, specifically acting.  It’s my other profession.  I’m also a life-long martial artist as well, so that’s another activity that I continue to train in.

8. Do you play a musical instrument?

I’ve been a drummer and percussionist since high school.  I was in the marching band back then and part of the drum line.

9. Single or married?

Married to my beautiful and talented wife Pamela.

10. Children or no?

No children.

11. Pets?

Currently none.  But we had a beloved cat named Clawde who I rescued a week before I met my wife Pamela.  We had him for 14 years.

12. Favorite place to write?

I do enjoy writing out of the home office in the kitchen, but I’ve also written while in the green room or trailer on film/TV sets.  It’s the advantage of having a laptop.  You’d think the beach would be a great place, but the sun’s glare makes the screen impossible to read.

13. Favorite restaurant?

My favorite food since childhood is Mexican, especially tacos.  There’s a great restaurant in the L.A. area, Don Cuco’s, which has great Mexican cuisine.  As I first grew up in San Diego before moving to Hawaii, I really fell in love with tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and such.

14. Do you work outside the home?

Sometimes when I get film or television acting gigs.  But I generally operate from my home office when writing.

15. What was the name of the last movie you saw?

I saw “Free Guy” on streaming.  It was a lot of fun, and Ryan Reynolds’ character had some similarities to my CYBER FIGHTER hero Brian Baldwin.

16. Favorite outdoor activity?

During the hot summers, boogie boarding is one of my favorite activities at the beach.  Growing up in Hawaii, the beach was one of my favorite places to go.  But I also enjoy doing my martial arts training outside too.  It’s a great way to work out and get some fresh air.

17. Pet peeve?

Negative people who complain a lot.

18. Your goal in life?

To make my living as an entertainment creator of film/TV/book projects.  I first dreamed about this as a kid, but now it’s a realistic goal with the democratization of technology.

19. Your most exciting moment?

That would be the time I won $50,000 on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.  My wife Pamela was my “plus one” on stage and I correctly answered a question about what sport the GoPro camera was invented for.  It was surfing.  Our friends also said that was one of the most compelling half hours of television too.

20. The love of your life?

That would be my soul mate Pamela.  She’s definitely the love of my life.  We also work together a lot, especially with our YouTube web series That Darn Girlfriend, an homage to classic 1960s/70s sitcoms.

When interviewed, the author tells us his life story, “I’ve actually been writing since elementary school.  I always liked writing my own science-fiction stories, though my early work was derivative of TV shows I loved like SPACE: 1999 and the 1970s version of Buck Rogers.  When my family moved to Hawaii (my Dad was a Captain in the U.S. Navy), I started making my own movies first with a Super-8 camera and then our family’s VHS camcorder.  In high school I wrote, directed, and starred in my very first feature Law of the Ninja, with my siblings as co-stars and the neighborhood kids as background actors.

When I came to Hollywood, I not only continued with my acting career, but also used my writing skills to pen some screenplays, a few of which I was hired to write from an indie producer.  CYBER FIGHTER was originally intended as a vehicle for my acting career, but gradually developed into a bigger story which my debut novel tells.  It is my very first book that I’ve ever published.

My wife Pamela and I started our own production company Four Scorpio Productions, and we have our own YouTube channel where we began making short films and then developed our own web series sitcom That Darn Girlfriend which is in its third season.  It’s a quirky fun parody of classic 1960s/1970s sitcoms, done in that style as well.  We’ve built an audience of over 3,500 subscribers.  I also share my filmmaking/VFX knowledge with a tutorial series that I produce and host on the channel as well:  https://williamjosephhill.com/  and http://fourscorpio.com/  and  https://www.youtube.com/fourscorpio.

William Joseph Hill’s book CYBER FIGHTER, with its big screen adaptation underway, is a sci-fi/martial arts/action-adventure story that will engage readers in this action-packed “page turner.”

Said the author Mr. Hill, “I’m hoping that my CYBER FIGHTER readers have fun with the story and have a few good laughs, along with being thrilled by the action sequences I have in the story. I’d also like them to think about the scientific possibilities that the story explores.  As we spend more and more of our lives online, the idea that you could learn skills via Virtual Reality is becoming less science fiction and closer to actuality.”

Cyber Fighter is the story of a clumsy temp Brian Baldwin who takes a job at defense contractor Kirkman Enterprises, where he volunteers to test their latest software program on himself by getting black belt fighting skills downloaded directly to his brain via a Virtual Reality immersive experience, turning him into a human weapon.

When Brian discovers that the eccentric main programmer Humbert Cloogey has sold him off to the Army for induction, he makes his escape, assisted by his only ally Dr. Kate Rand, a neuroscientist who works for the company, but who has some secrets herself.

Simultaneously as Brian is undergoing the experiment, a Triad crime boss and part-time cloning engineer Lau Xiaoming, operating out of North Korea, hacks into the U.S. server hosting the software, planting a Trojan program into Brian’s brain that holds the secret to “Project Starfish”, his plan for world domination.

Brian finds himself pursued by not only the U.S. Army, and FBI, but also by Xiaoming and his minions, all looking to grab him for their own exploits.

The core of my story is Brian’s journey, going from a middle-aged man who gave up on his dreams, to suddenly finding himself empowered with skills he never thought he’d ever achieve.  Almost overnight he acquires a superhero status.  But he discovers that he apparently hasn’t achieved any more control over his life than before.  In fact, his life seems pretty much out of control now.

Plans for a CYBER FIGHTER feature length movie from William Hill lie ahead. He said, “I am also developing CYBER FIGHTER into a feature film.  Part of that process includes doing a short film version for a proof-of-concept for my vision of the full feature.  I am hoping to produce and shoot the short film this summer and have it go to festivals.  I also did a comic book adaptation of that short film version that is also for sale on Amazon.  Learn more at this link:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZL6X6W6

“The Matrix on steroids!!!”
“For fans of Sci-Fi, a-la Monty Python”
“A great read for the Martial Artist”
