- Are you a morning writer or a night writer?
Morning! I get up at 4:30 on workdays to write. It’s my most creative time of day,
and I usually wake up excited to get to it. - Do you outline or are you a pantster?
I generally know where I want to go with a work, and sometimes will sketch it out a
la Syd Field’s The Screenwriter’s Workbook, but once it’s going, I let the story and
the characters dictate where to go. - Which comes first – plot or character?
It pains me to admit this, but plot. I try to make my characters as real and engaging as
possible, but plot is the driving force behind all my work. - Noise or quiet when working on your manuscript?
I listen to movie soundtracks while creating. If I can find the perfect soundtrack for
the day’s work, it sparks life to the whole process. I LOVE writing to soundtracks.
It’s like having your own private movie. - Favorite TV show?
That’s a tough one. There are so many. The X Files is my comfort show. When I hear
the theme something inside my chest clicks and relaxes. I also loved Breaking Bad,
The Expanse, Bosch, The Walking Dead, and probably two dozen others. - Favorite type of music?
It depends on the context. Soundtracks for writing. Classic Rock for working out.
And driving. Classical for peace. Sometimes when I’m kayaking, I’ll go through all
three genres, interspersed with silence. - Favorite craft besides writing?
Cooking. I like to make my own pasta, and do most of the cooking for the household. - Do you play a musical instrument?
I played the trumpet for more than twenty years, but then got bored with myself. I
mean to pick it up again sometimes soon.
- Single or married?
Married! To a wonderful Belgian woman for almost 30 years. - Children or no?
Two spectacular children. A girl of 23 who is just finishing up her student teaching
and embarking off into the world, and a boy of 17 who’s going to take the world by
storm. He’s the smartest, hardest-working individual I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. - Pets?
A rabbit named Houston. A Lionhead. - Favorite place to write?
I have a writing nook set up just off the kitchen. The wall is crammed with pictures
and souvenirs. The shelves have knickknacks that relate to the books (a statue of
Santa Muerte, a switchblade knife, etc.) - Favorite restaurant?
Another tough one. We have a regular sushi place, a Chinese place, an Italian place,
and a Thai place we frequent. - Do you work outside the home?
I teach high school English full time. - What was the name of the last movie you saw?
The Black Phone - Favorite outdoor activity?
Right now: kayaking. - Pet peeve?
Complainers. - Your goal in life?
To make enough money on my books to retire.
- Your most exciting moment?
Winning my kickboxing fight at age 55.5. - The love of your life?
My kids. My wife as well, but the kids…I’d jump in front of a bus without hesitation
to save them. For the wife, I think I’d hesitate…just a moment.
