Today's guest is Avery Daniels, author of the paranormal cozy mystery novel, FIRST BITE: ACCIDENTAL PI MYSTERY BOOK 1. Avery is here to give you the lowdown of her life, writing and goals.
1. Are you a morning writer or a night writer?
Night, or afternoon.
2. Do you outline or are you a pantster?
I am a bonafide hybrid. I plot, which is to say I figure out 8 plot
points roughly evenly throughout the story.
I figure out the basics of victim, killer and weapon, motive, and
suspects and their motives. That is only
a meager skeleton to then build all the rest on. But that leaves a whole lot to be figured out
as I write.
3. Which comes first – plot or character?
That is the big argument in the writing community. But since I write mysteries, the plot is
rather central. You can tell from my
rough plotting process I mentioned that I rough out the plot, but that does
include the characters (killer, victim, and suspects) involved in the plot as
well.
4. Noise or quiet when working on your manuscript?
Quiet, although I enjoy writing at a locally owned college hang-out and
restaurant. The background noise is fine
and lets me people watch. But otherwise
I like quiet music or nothing.
5. Favorite TV show? Currently it is
Equalizer with Queen Latifa.
6. Favorite type of music? New
Age/spiritual like Enya, 60s through 90s rock/pop, smooth jazz, classic R&B
like Lou Rowls, Michael Buble. I have
varied tastes, I even have bagpipe music on my playlist.
7. Favorite craft besides writing? Cardmaking,
scrapbooking, amateur photography, and watercolor and acrylic painting.
8. Do you play a musical instrument?
Not anymore, I used to play clarinet.
9. Single or married? In a relationship
10. Children or no?
No, unless you count my two cats, rescues.
11. Pets? Yes, two
rescued black cats. They are litter mates
who are bonded and nobody wanted to adopt the shy boy, everybody wanted the
really outgoing boy. I took them both in
and now the shy boy is very vocal and a sweetheart. I have two digital scrapbook pages available
to newsletter subscribers of my boys. I
love to share about them. I’m a proud
pet parent!
12. Favorite place to write?
I love to write in a downtown restaurant
that serves NY style pizza and artisan sandwiches. It is a college hangout and has a toy store,
bookstore, and wine bar attached. You
can walk from one through to the others, one after the other. I have a favorite table tucked away in a
corner.
13. Favorite
restaurant? There are a
few. I love the restaurant in a
historical 1800s hotel in town called the Cliff House. I also love the French bistro La Baguette, and
the locally owned fondue place in a historic home named Mona Lisa. If they have a good wine list I’ll probably
like them.
14. Do you work outside the home? No, although I used to
work in Department of Defense and I was a quality assurance engineer. But I’m happy being a full time author now.
15. What was the name of the last
movie you saw? Death on the Nile with Gal Gadot directed by
Kenneth Branagh. Next I will revisit the 1978 version with Mia Farrow.
16. Favorite outdoor activity?
Hiking
17. Pet peeve? Slow drivers (hanging my head in shame)
18. Your goal in life?
Being a published author, so I am living
it daily.
19. Your most exciting moment?
Having dinner with Jeffrey Devers at a writer’s conference.
20. The love of your life? My significant other, and my cats.
