# 20 Questions

20 Questions with F.M. Meredith, Author of 'Reversal of Fortune' @marilynmeredith #20Questions

Today's guest is F.M. Meredith, author of the mystery, Reversal of Fortune. F.M. is here today to answer 20 questions about her life, writing and goals.

  1. Are you a morning writer or a night writer?

I do my best writing in the morning—however, if I’m on a roll, and everything is coming together easily, I can write anytime and anywhere.

  1. Do you outline or are you a pantster?

I’m mainly a pantster—though I keep a running narrative in a notebook of what is happening day by day. Once I wrote a book and skipped a whole day—my editor discovered it.  I also jot down ideas as they pop into my head because they just as easily pop out.

  1. Which comes first – plot or character?

It’s truly a combination. I get an idea of what the story is going to be about first. With my series books, I already have the main and many supporting characters. If someone is going to be murdered, which was the case in this latest, Reversal of Fortune, I knew the victim would be the fortune teller. Then it was a matter of deciding what she looked like, the name that fitted her best, and a bit of her history. From there, the plot and the rest of the characters began to develop.

  1. Noise or quiet when working on your manuscript?

My home is often noisy because our granddaughter and family live with us. When they are home, the three greats have a wonderful and noisy time together. It doesn’t bother me at all. My first two published books were partially written while I was caring for three grandchildren, five and under. I wrote at the end of the dining room table, while the three played in front of me. Of course, it’s great to work when it is quiet.

  1. Favorite TV show?

Blue Bloods, not only because it’s a well-written and acted police drama, but because of the family dynamics. Also liked the first season of the Lincoln Lawyer, from a different side of the law.

  1. Favorite type of music?

All the really old and popular music, big bands and singers who enunciated their words. I do love good jazz and some Country/Western.

  1. Favorite craft besides writing?

Years ago I loved to paint—but finally decided I should choose between artistic endeavors and writing, and chose writing.

  1. Do you play a musical instrument?

Once played the piano, no longer.

  1. Single or married?

Married to the same cute sailor I went on a blind date with when I was a senior in high school—many long years ago.

10.  Children or no?

We had five, two boys and three girls. Now we have many grands and greats, and our 9th great-great is expected in October.

11.  Pets?

A very old cat named Sundance, but we are surrounded by the grands’ pets which include another cat, a dog, 3 peacocks, chickens and ducks, and 2 goats.

12.  Favorite place to write?

In my office where I can look out the window and see the foothills and beyond to the peaks of the Southern Sierra.

13.  Favorite restaurant?

I have two: The Thai Kitchen, and La Concina de Dona Maggie.

14.  Do you work outside the home?

No, but I have another job that I do right here and that’s write program designs for people who want to open licensed home for people with developmental disabilities, children, adults and seniors.

15.  What was the name of the last movie you saw?

I haven’t been to a movie in a theater since the pandemic, and I’m not sure, but I think it was the first Downton Abbey movie. I do watch a lot of movies through Netflix and Amazon Prime.

16.  Favorite outdoor activity?

Once was swimming, but haven’t been in the ocean or pool for a long time. These days, I love to go the coast and sightsee.

17.  Pet peeve?

Not sure I have one.

18.  Your goal in life?

What it always has been, to take care of what needs to be done and be kind and helpful to all who are around me. And of course, to entertain those who read my books.

19.  Your most exciting moment?

When I won an award for my non-mystery from Epic, Lingering Spirit, a romance with a touch of the supernatural. It was based on something that really happened in our family, a book I felt compelled to write.

20.  The love of your life?

Of course it’s my husband. We’ve spent 71 years together.  But I have to add, my love overflows for all those adults and children who came from our long marriage. I so enjoy spending time with them.
