Today's guest is Stella Atrium, author of the scifi, HOME RULE: THE TRIBAL WARS BOOK 3. Stella is here with us today to tell us more about the author behind the book.
1. Are you a morning writer or a night writer?
I love the morning for writing. Get some work done before the phone starts ringing and email starts popping. Of course, I nap most afternoons, so that’s time not devoted to writing. LOL
2. Do you outline or are you a pantster?
I was taught that action grows out of character, but that’s only for novels maybe. Characters in HOME RULE jump between planets, so I do have a grid for who is where during any one scene.
3. Which comes first – plot or character?
My method for what happens next is to put two competing characters in a room together and see what develops. Dialogue is primary in my stories, revealing how women fight, more subtle than the male characters who resort to fisticuffs.
4. Noise or quiet when working on your manuscript?
I like the quiet. A writer must make friends with solitude, although I seldom feel alone in the company of my characters.
5. Favorite craft besides writing?
Besides writing, promoting, and calendar planning… I like to attend the ballet. The dancers are mute, so that’s a nice break from working with words. I saw a ballet based on a Shakespeare play once, and found myself mouthing the rhyming couplets.
6. Favorite place to write?
Working on the laptop means I’m sort of stuck at home. I take the MacBook to the café sometimes, but lugging it around becomes a chore. An outing is a great break from writing, so I separate the two.
7. Favorite restaurant?
The best sushi place in Chicago is two blocks from my home, so I’m really spoiled in that regard.
8. Do you work outside the home?
I still teach online writing classes, but I get that done at home. I like to keep my hand in for engaging with emerging writers. Many early assumptions they make send me back to my own WIP for, “did I do that too?”
9. Your goal in life?
My intent in my golden years is to get my characters in front of their readers. My loyalty is to the characters -- surprising huh?
So many life events the characters experience that we can relate to, and ways to solve problems. I want young readers to feel inspired by how the tribal women overcome adversity for the march toward unity and home rule.
10. Your most exciting moment?
In August 2023, we just published HOME RULE for wide distribution (previously in Kindle Unlimited). By way of promoters, the novel (book 3 in a trilogy) debuted in the Top Ten on Amazon. That was pretty special.
11. The love of your life?
I have identified as a writer for more than half a century, since I was 12. I would call that a great love.
Stella Atrium is writing The Tribal Wars series. The first trilogy is available as ebooks and in print. BookLife has awarded the Editor’s Pick designation for each book upon its release.
Home Rule rounds out the first trilogy and received first place in the 2023 Artisan Book Review Awards for Science Fiction and Fantasy.
