Today's guest is John Andrew Fredrick, author of the time fiction novel, THE KING OF GOOD INTENTIONS III. John is here with us today to tell us more about the author behind the book.
John is the author of five novels and one book on the early films of Wes Anderson. He is the principal songwriter/singer of an indie rock band called The Black Watch that has released twenty-two albums to considerable acclaim. As Popmatters.com has observed, he is an accomplished painter. His poems have appeared in The Los Angeles Press, Santa Barbara Magazine, and Artillery, among others. Can you tell us more about your latest book, The King of Good Intentions III?
It's the funniest book you've never read. It will put you in mind of Tristram Shandy (if you majored in English in college) or Proust (if you minored in French). Seriously, it's pretty funny. It's at times outlandish. And our tagline has been "Your money back if you don't laugh at least seven and a half times."
What is your favorite part of The King of Good Intentions III?
That is such a tough question. I have been going over the text to see which passages I might read at readings/bookstores and I am having the hardest time deciding. I think the narrative where Katie, the other woman, tells her life story is pretty interesting, beautifully presented, but it isn't the funniest bit. A lot of the bits about an indie band touring are pretty tragically hilarious. I have to give it a better think!
What's the first thing - ever - that you remember writing?
Madly in love with J.D. Salinger and being at a new prep school at 14 and very lonely, I wrote fifty or so pages of a novel about my sarcastic circle of wonderful boyhood/sportif friends in Santa Barbara.
As a musician, do you have to have music on when you write and what kind?
Sometimes I will listen on headphones. When I wrote the first King, my roommate at the time was super loud and always in the living room right outside my door (sometimes having really voluble sex with strangers), so yeah. Haha. But by and large I like it quiet. I sure do wish SHE had been quieter.
What is the snack you need when you write?
Are coffees and scotches snacks?
Out of all the books you have written, which one would you like to be remembered most for?
One that's not found a publisher yet: a thriller about a prof and a beautiful female novelist who are both obsessed with My Bloody Valentine.
What do you hope readers will take away from your book after they've finished reading it?
Sidesplitting joy and a yen to check out my other works.

As The Weird Sisters return from their first What-Could-Go-Wrong (spoiler alert – everything) National Tour, bandmates/lovers John and Jenny face their iffy futures together (or apart) as the brilliant and mysterious Katie upends the romantic/artistic balance that’s been precarious-at-best. The unmitigated vanity, the mythopoeic beauty, the megalomania and heartbreak, the exquisite talent and ludicrous hubris – it’s all here in Fredrick’s wonderful, tart-sweet, final installment.
