Today's guest is Paul A. Destefano, author of the urban fantasy/paranormal romance novel, RIFTSIDERS: UNLAWFUL POSSESSION. Paul is here to give you the lowdown of his life, writing and goals.
1. Are you a morning writer or a night writer?
I’m a full-time writer. Which means 9AM-6PM, and maybe a bit more.
2. Do you outline or are you a pantster?
Crazy outliner. Tens of thousands of words before a manuscript gets sentence
one.
3. Which comes first – plot or character?
Plot hook, not really plot. Then characters that fit it. Then how characters interact
with the plot to drive it and create the arc.
4. Noise or quiet when working on your manuscript?
Every project gets a playlist. If the headphones are on, I’m writing.
5. Favorite TV show?
The Mandalorian stole my inner geek heart.
6. Favorite type of music?
Prog Rock.
7. Favorite craft besides writing?
Boardgames.
8. Do you play a musical instrument?
Zendrum – it’s an electronic instrument worn like a guitar, but triggers drums
and percussion.
9. Single or married?
Married.
10. Children or no?
A son and a daughter.
11. Pets?
Two sugar gliders, a bearded dragon, four cats and a Yorkshire Terrier.
12. Favorite place to write?
My desk.
13. Favorite restaurant?
Blaze Smith Hill. It’s upscale Cajun.
14. Do you work outside the home?
When giving seminars and presentations, yes.
15. What was the name of the last
movie you saw?
Turning Red
16. Favorite outdoor activity?
Handball
17. Pet peeve?
People who state opinions as fact.
18. Your goal in life?
I’d like to see something I write transformed into another media.
19. Your most exciting moment?
Holding my son for the
first time.
20. The love of your life?
My wife.
Paul A. DeStefano and his wife live on Long Island, NY, with a strange menagerie that includes a dog, a few cats, sugar gliders, a bearded dragon, and several grown children that have not left.
After graduating from Hofstra University with a split degree in English and Acting, he worked in the board gaming and roleplaying industry for decades, including officially licensed projects for Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. He did not win the Origins Award for Best Miniatures Rules in 2004 and has forgotten that bitter defeat. When not playing and working on games, he is sometimes found touring internationally, giving lectures on worldbuilding and character design.
Being a professional full-time blacksmith for several years made him realize how much less painful it was to go back to writing. He’s been lucky enough to hold the Top Humor Writer badge at Medium multiple times and has had his work narrated by James Cosmo (Lord Mormont from Game of Thrones) on multimillion-dollar Kickstarter projects.
It is also worth noting that having never taken any bassoon lessons, he still cannot play one.
