10 Things You Might Not Know About The Code

  • When I started writing The Code, I had an idea but little more. I followed it. After all, this approach had worked with The Trust and The Solicitor, but I realized soon after starting the writing process for The Code that it would be more than a murder mystery. To make the project capture the idea I had in my head, I realized that I had a lot of work to do. So below are 10 things that may not be apparent about The Code. And don’t worry, there aren’t any spoilers.

1 - While I thought that I had researched the first two books (and to an extent I had), I realized those books had been about solving a murder. The research I did for those books was to make sure the books were factually accurate. This research also went into The Code but more was needed. The Code is something different; it is not only a murder mystery, but there is a historical backdrop that creates yet another mystery. I needed to learn about the history.  Today, even after writing the book, I am still learning about this history. It’s also given me the motivation to dive deeper into other areas of Charleston and South Carolina history. Who knows, perhaps the next book my follow suit.

2 - When I finished The Solicitor, I had a crossroad, a question of sorts. Well, more of a dilemma. Did I continue the serialization with the next book picking up where The Solicitor ended, or did I do something else? In thinking about this question, I realized that The Trust had been written from the perspective of an attorney who had been practicing law for 5-7 years. I also realized there was a backstory to the characters and their lives. So The Code became a prequel - the most recently published, but the first in chronological order.

3 - Every book starts at sunrise. Not exactly sure why, but every book starts at dawn.

4 - The neighborhood where Noah lives and where parts of The Code are based is patterned on real neighborhoods in Charleston.

5 - In The Code, Noah’s new Australian shepherd, Austin, finds a body, two actually. While the circumstances have been adapted for the story, this was based on actual events from 19th-century France.

6 - Lavinia Fischer, the innkeeper in The Code who is often referred to as the first serial killer in the United States, was only 27 at the time of her execution.

7 - The Old Charleston Jail, where Lavinia Fischer was held while being tried for her alleged crimes, is considered among the most haunted locations in Charleston. You can even see the room where Lavinia Fischer was held during her time in the jail.

8 - John Lyde Wilson, the 49th governor of the State of South Carolina from 1822 - 1824, and without whom The Code would not have been possible, was born in Marlboro County, South Carolina, studied law in Baltimore, Maryland, and died in Charleston, South Carolina. The strange thing is that while he is buried in Charleston, the exact location of his burial site has been a challenge to locate.

9 - The font for The Code is called Palatino. It was used for The Trust and has remained the font for all the books.

10 - Research has already begun on the next Noah Parks book. The main idea was right in front of me, I had even woven it into the story of all three books, but I didn’t realize it until one of the early readers asked when I would answer a particular question. Stay tuned for that question and the answer.
